More cake

Last Saturday, we finally got around to having Zeke's much delayed birthday party. This was his cake: nine individual train cars.

I'm devoting a whole post to the cake, because I don't think we will ever do this again! I made the cake, and Aaron and I decorated the train cars together. I won't embarrass myself by saying how late we were up or how long we took to decorate the cars with candies and frosting. Among the many comments to be heard that night: "If we leave now, I bet we could find a Dora cake at Publix right now" and "This is why second children don't get birthday parties." It is a cute cake, but we are just not qualified to using decorative frosting. (And for those who asked: chewy Spree for wheels, chocolate chips for coal, graham crackers for tracks, gummy bears for boxcar riders, M & M's/licorice/pretzels for freight, et cetera.)

Making a train cake wasn't the original plan, but we wanted to make sure the cake was something that Zeke could recognize and be excited about. It worked. Early in his party, I had Aaron bring out the cake so that it could sit on the table and be appreciated for at least a few minutes. However, Zeke was so excited to see the cake ("CHOO CHOO!") that we decided to do cake first thing in the party. You may not be able to tell but I'm restraining him from crawling on the table to eat the engine -- which he did get to enjoy after a little singing and blowing out of candles. All in all, the ridiculous use of frosting was ultimately worth it, but maybe next time we will save the elaborate efforts for a birthday when he will remember it!

Wow! I'm very impressed with Mom and Dad's efforts! You and Aaron did a wonderful job -- and in spite of all the hard and tedious work -- I bet you were absolutely delighted with Zeke's reaction to his "choo choo."

I'm not an artist, but I had such fun making my amateur cakes for Chris' birthdays. I knew I'd always get a positive reaction from him regardless of the "interesting" finished products!

I'm glad you took some good pictures of Zeke's train as he may want to recreate it for his son one day!

Love to you all and a Happy Belated Birthday to Zeke!
Diane

Wow! How cute! Zeke is so lucky! We have yet to figure out what to do for Chris' birthday. Yes, I'm still around, and I'll update more soon!

What a great cake! Zeke looks absolutely delighted to see the train and cars.

Just when he was learning not to put toys in his mouth, you make him a toy train that he can eat. Go figure!

How will you top this one next year?

Love,
Trish
