Look Who Is Cooking in the Kitchen with Mommy!

It was a busy day for us. It was our turn to host the playgroup Zeke and I attend. That meant: attempting to clean up, baking some snacks, hosting nine moms and babies, trying to hold conversations over the din of electronic toys for a few hours, and then cleaning up again. It was a little overwhelming, but I thought it was a lot of fun!

As a sidenote, Zeke may never willingly take another nap: He fell asleep for his morning nap a little before people started coming over. When he woke up, the house was full of babies playing with HIS toys. He always suspected that we threw parties while he was asleep and now he knows it firsthand! Mr. Baby did take an afternoon nap, though (after a lot of convincing) and then he played with his water table outside, causing the removal of his soaked clothing. He also tried some new foods today including soy yogurt and toasted cheese sandwiches.

Knowing how tired Mommy was by dinnertime, Zeke volunteered to rearrange anything he reach in the open refrigerator, namely leftover carrots and lemon juice. What a thoughtful child!

Water Babies

The Florida Aquarium is a great aquarium, especially for kids, and I'm glad we made the trip. The aquarium has a fun outdoor play area with water features -- fountains, waterfalls, small waterslides. Zach was ready to enjoy it, but Zeke was a little uncertain. He would not let go of his deathgrip on me when I brought him near the fountains, but after a few moments of reassurance and some encouragement from Zach, he was ready to explore. He crawled from waterspout to waterspout and then kept trying to get onto the "pirate ship" that is for older children. After finally getting him from the pirate ship, Zeke tried out and loved the water slide for toddlers. It was the first time he got to try out some of the new swim gear he got for his birthday!

That's Zeke in the corner heading to the pirate ship steps!

Pretty Boy

My baby is cute, but he has some serious competition from his cousin as you can see in these photos from the Aquarium.

Hermit Crabs

Here are some photos of the Zach and Zeke at the Florida Aquarium, pretending to be hermit crabs. Yes, they are wearing absolutely adorable matching shirts.

Zach & Zeke

Zeke and Zach were so cute when they were together when we were in Florida. I think that Zeke learned a lot from being around his big cousin when we were in Florida and that it's part of the reason Zeke has been doing so many new things.

By the end of the trip, however, both of them were exhausted from all the commotion and exhortations to share. In the last few days of the trip, I promised Zach that if he was a real good boy, I would take the interloper away. This was a relief to him, of course, because he had been very concerned when his mother babysat Zeke for a few hours that day. Who was this little kid and why was he entitled to play with Zach's toys and Zach's mama?!

Still, you can see how well they got along even on the last day of our trip to Florida. They held hands in the car all the way home after a (failed) attempt to get them to take their picture with the Easter Bunny.

We're Back!

Long time, no post! Thanks to those who have been calling and writing to see what we are doing, other than not posting. We've missed you, too.

In brief, we've been busy with nothing more involved than day to day life. (It may not sound like a lot, but it's enough that I have recently been contemplating stopping the blog.) Here's some of what we have been doing: Easter egg hunts, non-Easter "Spring" egg hunts, trips to Florida and back, baking for our first bake sale, freecycling, cleaning, grocery shopping, and laundry, too much laundry. Here's some of what Zeke's been doing: clapping, eating, signing a little, eating, standing, eating, playing in water, eating, babbling like crazy, eating, playing, eating, loving baths, singing, drinking juice boxes, getting more teeth, eating, and not sleeping.

No really, Zeke has been eating a lot more recently. I suspect that the lean eating from a month ago when Zeke was recovering from a stomach bug is long gone. I guess Mr. Baby needs a lot of fuel to grow into Mr. Toddler. Typical breakfast is oatmeal, at least half a banana, apple sauce, maybe some orange juice and sometimes a waffle or toast. He is especially keen for biscuits and will scream until he gets some. (Is this a mark of a Southern boy?) Lunch is usually more restrained and is baby food. Typical dinner is rice cooked in broth, veggie chicken, pureed vegetable, a little soy milk and fresh fruit. In fact, his favorite food these days is ripe cantaloupe and he can consume a quarter of a cantaloupe at a time. Still, feeding him is a challenge. One day he likes something, the next it gets spit out or tossed onto the wall or dropped to the dog. Also, I'm having a hard time thinking of things that we can all eat together as a family conveniently. Timing is a challenge: often, it's easiest to eat after he has already gone to bed. Creativity is another challenge: I don't find a lot of the food we eat suitable for Zeke. Tomorrow I'm going to head out to the library to check out some cookbooks to get me over this slump.

Zeke, in general, has very full days (and nights) and seems to do something new at a pace than we can hardly get used to. When we got back from Florida, he wowed his dad (and me) with all sorts of new skills, referenced (subtly) by this post title. For example, he gets in and out of his car so confidently and in a flash. He turns himself backwards and all around and even tries to slip in the car Dukes of Hazzard style going in on the side with no door. He also somehow can navigate going down the stairs. Now we knew he could get down one or two by himself, but didn't expect him to be able to get from the top to the bottom all by himself. Oh well -- thank goodness for exceeding expectations and good baby gates.

Sunshine State

Zeke and I have been away from home for the past week and are in Florida with my family. We miss home and Aaron but will be back at the end of the week. This is the first time Zeke and his daddy have been apart for more than a few hours and the first time that I have been on constant mom duty. I have photos (of course) and stories, but will probably not post until we get home...I claim traveler's exhaustion!
